On January 25, 2024, a roundtable discussion on the topic “What is the truth about the status of the brown bear (Ursus arctos L.) in Bulgaria? Trends, problems, and possible solutions” took place at the Hunter’s House in Sofia. The event was organized by the National Hunting and Fishing Association “Union of Hunters and Anglers in Bulgaria.”

Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Executive Forest Agency, the Executive Environmental Agency, scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and universities, state forestry enterprises, hunting and forestry enterprises, nature parks, numerous non-governmental organizations, hunting teams, and associations participated in the event.

During the roundtable, Prof. Todor Gurov from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (IICT-BAS) – a leading partner in the National Competence Center in Bulgaria (NCC Bulgaria) – presented a talk on “Software for Statistical Analysis of the Brown Bear Population.” Through this report, he showcased the results of collaboration with the Executive Environmental Agency in managing the brown bear population in Bulgaria. He has also emphasized the necessity of utilizing High-Performance Computing (HPC) and High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) technologies in addressing issues arising in the activities of government organizations.
