On September 11, 2024, the webinar “Mathematics – The Necessary ‘Evil’ for Every Aspiring AI Specialist” occurred online. Invited speakers included Veselka Hristova (Director and Senior Mathematics Lecturer at TUES under TU-Sofia), Emanuil Atanasov (Professor at the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), Dimitar Terziev (Machine Learning Engineer), and Simeon Georgiev (Software Developer). During the webinar, the following topics were discussed:
- Why mathematics forms the foundation of artificial intelligence and how it supports the understanding of complex algorithms.
- The essential mathematical concepts indispensable for AI specialists—linear algebra, probability, statistics, and calculus.
- How to apply mathematical knowledge in practice and transition from theoretical equations to real-world AI solutions.
- Ways to refresh or expand school-level knowledge in a fun and intuitive manner.
- Tips and tricks for overcoming fear of mathematics and building a strong foundation for a future career.
The guests highlighted some of the mathematical fundamentals necessary for specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), the role of supercomputers like Hemus, and their applications in scientific research.
The conversation began by identifying the most critical mathematical concepts that beginners in AI should master and where these skills can be applied. The power of mathematical thinking, as Prof. E. Atanasov noted, lies in its ability to solve complex problems and develop new analytical models.
Prof. Atanasov also discussed the Hemus supercomputer, which provides a robust infrastructure for complex computations supporting advancements in fields like physics, chemistry, and medicine. This infrastructure enables simulations and analyses that require substantial computational resources.
He emphasized the role of AI in supercomputing, which includes processing large datasets, optimizing business processes, and conducting scientific research. Prof. Atanasov concluded by underlining that the presence of supercomputers like Hemus positions Bulgaria at the forefront of research and innovation.
