The Bulgarian supercomputer Discoverer, part of the European network of high-performance machines of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, has operatively achieved and exceeded the planned computing power and productivity. The parameters of the machine were tested during planned tests, which were performed last week by the supplier of the machine – Atos, a global leader in digital transformation.

At 100% capacity utilisation, Discoverer showed excellent results, with productive power reaching 4.518 petaflops, with a planned 4.44 petaflops, and reported peak performance of 6.006 petaflops, with 6 petaflops set.

The tests indicate that the supercomputer will likely be included in the world ranking for performance of supercomputers “Top 500”, said the chairman of the Supervisory Board of Sofia Tech Park Petar Statev. The deadline for application in the ranking is 11 June 2021 and the team of “Supercomputer Petascale-Bulgaria” is already preparing the necessary documents that will be submitted to the world organisation. ”We will find out exactly where we stand among these 500, once the complete official list will be.

The main goal of the supercomputer in Bulgaria is to support a number of research and innovation activities, to stimulate the industry based on the use of technologies for simulation, modeling and optimization. The capacity of the machine can be used in many application areas for the needs of a large number of public and private users, including small and medium enterprises at Bulgarian, regional and European level.
